Script: Hey guys, my name is Lyssa and welcome to my Communication Technology Podcast! Today we’ll be talking about the unique culture that surrounds EDM concerts. For those of you who don’t know, EDM stands for electronic dance music. This music is played at concerts and also music festivals where many artists come together to perform. All of the sets are usually full of complex light shows, colors and booming bass. Your parents might think the music is trash. Music snobs will argue that a 5 yr old could produce EDM music. Theyre like “Who would want to be crowded together and all sweaty listening to repetitive music? Drugs are everywhere, people get lost, it’s a dangerous environment! Going to one of these will surely corrupt your innocent soul completely or fry your brain!” But there are a ton of negative stereotypes surrounding these kinds of concerts. But that’s just what these are, stereotypes. However, there are so many good things in this culture, and it has grown into something that has that given people positive experiences that have changed their lives. The most obvious thing is the love of music that brings people together. Under the flashing lights, you can easily find like-minded people with similar interests in music. Everyone is able to dance together and have a good time. Music has the ability to make our problems melt away. Becoming totally immersed with others in the music can really bring people closer together. One of the greatest things that bring people together is a concept called PLUR, or “plur” that originated in the early 1990s. PLUR is a set of principles that stands for Peace, Love, Unity, and Respect. These values are supposed to be the most important thing when attending these events, even over the music itself. PLUR provides a strong sense of community. It helps create an environment with no judgment, no worries, and just positive energy. Of course, there is still drug culture, but PLUR states that you shouldn't be judged if you do them, but also if you don’t. The aspect of a nonjudgmental community trumps all. Sure it might seem a little hippie-like, but it is a lifestyle, perspective and state of mind that has given people amazing experiences. The nonjudgmental atmosphere makes it acceptable to either wear outrageous colorful costumes or just jeans and a t-shirt. It’s all about self expression and accepting others. Many people who adhere to the principles of PLUR are more than happy to help people who are separated from their friends, new to festivals, or maybe feeling a little under the weather. Many groups of friends call themselves rave families and go to festivals together. Often they will meet new people at festivals and adopt them into their own families, meeting up with them at future concerts. EDM concerts are not just a place to do drugs, they’re a community of people who want to spread positive energy and the Peace, Love, Unity and Respect to all. Again, my name is Lyssa and this is my Communication Technology Podcast talking about EDM culture! Thanks for listening!
